How does the technology work?
The Shot Clock has transformed the NBA basketball like nothing else. In basketball, the shot clock is a timer designed to increase the games pace. The offensive team must attempt a field goal before the shot clock expires. If the offensive team fails to score a field goal within the time limit, they are assessed a violation resulting in a turnover to their opponents.
Where was the technology discovered/invented?
Shot clock first came into use in 1954 in Syracuse, New York. When it was first introduced in the NBA, the shot clock was making players nervous as some players were taking just fewer than 20 seconds to shoot. Danny Biasone was the inventor of the shot clock after the 1953-54 basketball season to try and speed up the game and prevent teams from stalling.
Does the technology significantly help improve the sport in terms of performance, safety etc. Or is it just a fad?
The shot clock does significantly improve the sport. It increases the pace of the game, which results in the players taking a lot more shots. Before the shot clock was invented basketball was a lot more slower, even in some NBA games there were no shots taken.
Has the technology spread to other parts of the world through sport?
The shot clock has spread all throughout the world, and is being used in most basketball games you will watch (professional and non-professional)
Give 1 example of when the technology is used
The shot clock is used to time possessions by the offensive team. If a team does not attempt a field goal within 24 seconds of gaining possession of the ball, a violation is committed and possession is awarded to the other team.
Give 1 example of groups that have access to the technology
The shot clock is used in the NBA because it is played at a high level.
